Introduction

So I got back into the Warhammer 40,000 universe at the start of 2024. I was off work due to poor mental health and treated myself to the then new 10th edition 40k starter set. I’d last played 40k back in about 2003 during 4th edition.

I love worldbuilding, I do a lot of creative writing and as well as just painting miniatures (badly) I love coming up with backgrounds for miniatures, what regiment or chapter they’re in, certain characters and so on. So I wasn’t a huge fan of the move away from narrative play towards the focus on balance and competitive play.

I never actually got around to playing 40k. I liked the narrative element of Kill Team and soon got into that. Kill Team also got me working on little kitbash projects. That combined with my lack of focus (thanks ADHD) means rather than one big army, I’ve got a whole bunch of skirmish level forces. These little kitbash projects also introduced me to non GW models that can still be used in the 40k setting such as Wargames Atlantic and various 3d printed minis.

This is also where non-GW systems like One Page Rules come into play. While in Kill Team, your team is more or less set, OPR’s Firefight system allows you to make a team out of whatever miniatures you have. The simpler rules were also appealing to friends who were either new to tabletop wargaming and/or looking for a  more casual. Game

The stumbling block for me preferring narrative campaigns is that I’m not the most mobile person. I have a condition called functional neurological disorder and on any given day I don’t know if I’m going to be mobile enough to get to a local gaming club. This is where another possibility comes around. Solo play.

So on this blog I’m going to be talking about a few things

-Alternative rule sets

-Solo gaming

-Skirmish level games

-Kitbashing

-Off-brand 40k adjacent minis

-Worldbuilding for the above gaming.

All while being fairly crap at painting as I have Dyspraxia and therefore poor fine motor controls, but I find it relaxing which is how I got back into it and ultimately the only thing that matters.

I hope this is all enjoyable.
